Answers

Q: I already have a diving qualification, do I need to do the try dive before I can join the club?

A: No, you’re welcome to join. If your qualification isn’t with BSAC then we’ll take you as a cross over diver

Q: I don’t have a diving qualification and missed the try dive, can I join the club?

A: You’re welcome to join the club however without having done the try dive this year we won’t be able to provide you with training. We can still help get you qualified, our training officer will be able to give you more information.

Q: I missed the try dive, will you be doing another one this year?

A: Unfortunately we can only run try dives once a year as we get full up with new divers very quickly. We can’t take new trainees into the club without having done a try dive as places are really restricted. But there are other options so if you’re interested in becoming a new diver our training officer will be able to give you more information.

Q: Can I become a member if I missed sign up night?

A: Yes you can. Please contact the club secretary for more information

Q: I don’t have my own equipment, does the club provide it?

A: You need your own mask & fins, and you’ll need to hire a drysuit & undersuit from a local dive shop for each dive (unless you have your own). We have tanks, BCDs, regs, pony tanks, little torches etc. that you can hire from GUSAC.

Q: What happens if I miss a training session?

A: At GUSAC all our instructors are volunteers. It is therefore very important that you try your hardest to attend all the organised training sessions. If you have a genuine reason for not attending please contact the Training Officer at the earliest opportunity. We will always try our best to organise another training session. However, it may not always be possible to rearrange your training.

A: Google is a very useful tool as is the Aquatron website. Use them

Q: Where is the equipment store / lockup and how do I get in?

A: Access is via Great George Street. If walking: Walk along Oakfield Avenue past the Stevenson Building (University Gym). Cross over Gibson Street and continue along Oakfield Avenue. Turn right at Great George Street. Take your first right into the car park in front of Oakfield Lane. The lock up is located towards the end of the car park as a door on your right. If you need access to the lockup please contact the equipment officer.

Q: Where do I download forms from?

A: Our website and Facebook group have a number of forms available for downloading including medical forms and guides for how to hire a minibus.

Q: How do I sign up to the mailing list and do I have to reply to every email?

A: There is a link on this website (see here) with instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to the mailing list. No, you don’t have to reply to every email. Please think before hitting “reply all”

Q: I do not have my own transport, can I go diving?

A: Yes. Uni minibuses can be arranged for dive trips. Using public transport is usually not an option due to the amount of kit you have to carry, limitations on luggage allowances and the hard to access nature of some dive sites.

Q: What is the Facebook group for?

A: The Facebook group is a social group used for sharing information about diving, interesting news, selling equipment etc. It is NOT to be used for organising dives. You should always contact the Diving Officer when organising a dive.

Q: I run a dive tours company and want your business, should I post my details on the Facebook page?

A: No you should not. If you do, your advert will be removed and you will be banned from the page. Repeated infringements will result in you being reported to Facebook for spamming. If you genuinely think we would be interested in what you have to offer, please contact our expedition officers, details are on the Contact page on this website.
